Robert P. Handler, Principal & CEO
Mr. Handler has over 25 years of professional experience in commercial financial transactions, with most of his involvement in managing turnaround situations and other financially distressed financial matters. He has handled business reorganizations, acquisitions, mergers, court-supervised receiverships, sales and liquidations across the country and in a wide variety of industries. He recently participated in the reorganization of a $200 million nutritional supplement distributor, the sale of a regional coin vending operation, the liquidation and out-of-court composition plan of an internet video management firm and the reorganization of a $500 million paper manufacturer.
As a founding member and general counsel to commercial lending divisions of each of Bank of America and The CIT Group, Mr. Handler was responsible for the growth and success of each company’s commercial loan portfolio. In this role, he was charged with his company’s initiation, underwriting, structuring, documentation and administration of all loans to financially distressed companies, including oil and gas exploration firms, transportation companies, retail chains, movie production concerns, various distributors, and high-technology manufacturers. As a senior credit officer, he supervised all of their departments, including their underwriting, credit and field examination units and counseled all of them in the fields of lender liability, secured transactions, bankruptcy and environmental risks.
Mr. Handler also practiced law in a commercial litigation firm where he was engaged in all aspects of bankruptcy litigation on behalf of secured creditors, creditors’ committees and debtor clients. In addition, he has handled numerous foreclosures, public and private asset sales, as well as actions on guaranties, notes and leases.
Mr. Handler obtained his JD from the University of Iowa College of Law and his BA from Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa. He is past Chairman of the Loan Documentation Subcommittee of the Commercial Financial Services Committee of the American Bar Association, and a member of the Turnaround Management Association and the Chicago Bar Association. He actively participates in and/or chairs various panel discussions nationwide concerning current issues in turnarounds, bankruptcy, and commercial financial transactions.
